Mount Wilhelm

Mount Wilhelm, also called Wilhelmsberg in German and known locally as Enduwa Kombuglu or Kombugl’o Dimbin, is the highest mountain in Papua New Guinea at 4,509 metres. It sits in the Bismarck Range at the meeting point of the Chimbu, Jiwaka, and Madang provinces. Although it is on the island of New Guinea—which includes both Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian provinces of Papua—it is lower than several Indonesian peaks, including Puncak Jaya.

Depending on whether political boundaries or physical geography are used, either Mount Wilhelm or Puncak Jaya may be considered the highest mountain in Oceania, which is why some versions of the Seven Summits list include Mount Wilhelm. The mountain received its name in 1888 when German journalist Hugo Zöller named the surrounding range and several of its prominent peaks after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and his children.

Trekking Mount Wilhelm is considered moderate to challenging, but it’s one of the more accessible high-altitude climbs in the region. Mount Wilhelm is very achievable for fit beginners with proper preparation and a guide, but the altitude and weather make it more challenging than a typical hike.
