A short introductory tour to New Guinea visiting the area around Port Moresby and the lowland rainforest area of Kiunga. While we will be concentrating on getting as many species of Kingfishers as possible, we will also be looking for other New Guinea specialities particularly the spectacular Birds of Paradise. A highlight of the tour will be a full day river trip through unspoilt lowland rainforest where live at least eight possible Kingfishers and ten species of parrot. The huge, spectacular and rare Southern-crowned Pigeon can also be found here.
Participants need to be in good health and have a reasonalbe level of fitness. Although this is a short tour, you will be visiting a variety of habitats and you should expect some rough walking along fairly steep and muddy trails. Expect rain somewhere along the way and in these lowland areas, it can be hot and humid at all times of the year.
Hook billed, Collared, Azure, and Yellow billed Kingfishers, Little, Common and White tailed Paradise Kingfishers, Rufous bellied Kookaburra, Eclectus, Red cheeked Parrots, Yellow capped Pygmy Parrot, Palm and Sulphur crested Cockatoo, Southern Crowned Pigeon.
Day 1: Arrive in Port Moresby. A short tour of the Port Moresby area is arranged for those who arrive in time to take advantage of it.
Day 2: We take the early plane over to Kiunga on the Fly River in Western Province. Located in the midst of a huge area of lowland rainforest this is a great birding destination. Palm Cockatoo, Greater Bird of Paradise, Trumpet Manucode, Flame Bowerbird and Obscure Honeyeater are all possibilities here.
Day 3: Taking a boat up the Fly and Elevala Rivers to Kwatu landowner lodge we enter an area of pristine rainforest. We will be looking for 12-wired and King Bird of Paradise , Channel -billed Cuckoo, Common and Little Paradise Kingfishers, Hooded and Red-bellied Pittas, Blue Jewel-Babbler and the huge Southern Crowned Pigeon
Day 4: Morning birding around Kwatu before retuning by boat to Kiunga.
Day 5: Returning to Port Moresby we visit the PAU ponds where where Wandering and Spotted Whistling Ducks, Papuan Frogmouth and Fawn-breasted Bowerbird are amongst the species which can be seen.
Day 6: Full day guided birding in the Varirata National Park. Located on the Sogeri Plateau above Port Moresby this is a great birding spot. The Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise have a lek tree here, there are 6+ species of Kingfisaher including Brown-headed Paradise Kingfisher and Yellow-billed Kingfisher plus at least 7 species of dove not to mention Red-cheeked Parrots, Barred Owlet- nightjar and perhaps a Chestnut-backed Jewel-babbler or Painted Quail-Thrush.
Day 7: After an early breakfast we will head out to bird the sites around Port Moresby, including the mangroves; Collared Kingfisher may be found. Return to Port Moresby in time to take you to your evening flight.
